Patients who fall into the Stage 1 or Stage 2 categories and who have additional cardiovascular risk factors — such as diabetes, chronic kidney disease, or a prior cardiac event — are typically candidates for pharmacological intervention. Lisinopril, an ACE inhibitor, is frequently the first-line choice in these scenarios due to its proven efficacy, favorable safety profile, and additional protective effects on the kidneys.

How Lisinopril Lowers Blood Pressure

Lisinopril inhibits angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), which plays a central role in the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS). During that visit, your blood pressure reading becomes the primary metric for evaluating efficacy.

If your readings have not reached the target range — generally below 130/80 mmHg for most patients, or below 140/90 mmHg for lower-risk individuals — your physician may increase the dose incrementally. Lisinopril is available in doses ranging from 2.5 mg to 40 mg, and titration is typically gradual to minimize the risk of hypotension (abnormally low blood pressure), which can cause dizziness or fainting.

It is important to understand that individual response to ACE inhibitors varies. Factors including age, ethnicity, kidney function, sodium intake, and concurrent medications all influence how effectively lisinopril lowers blood pressure in any given patient.

Why Consistent Monitoring Matters

Some patients eventually require combination therapy, with lisinopril paired alongside a calcium channel blocker or a thiazide diuretic to achieve adequate control. Others may find that a single low dose is sufficient for years. The trajectory of your treatment depends entirely on the data — your numbers over time.
