Sleep disruption. Obstructive sleep apnea, which often goes undiagnosed for years, is a well-established driver of treatment-resistant hypertension. Fragmented sleep triggers repeated surges in cortisol and sympathetic nervous system activity that keep blood pressure elevated overnight and into the following day — a pattern that even optimally dosed antihypertensive medications struggle to fully counteract.
